Might be interesting to limit each person to only having say....3-8 fleets as attacking a planet at any 1 time. This compounded with a timer?
Could imagine people needing to start and work through strategies with each other having to coordinate which captains/fleets were being sent when, and when some died what else had to go in.
Also, open up both the western and eastern gates plox x.x

I really like the limit idea. Not the gates, seems like a dumb and minuscule gimmick. Multiple gates opened would result in the same type of battle, just requiring a tiny bit more coordination. Anyone who's coordinated defenses could easily split the forces as all incoming would also be split. This would also be a seriously huge disadvantage to attackers as their support captains would be split up. Any and all coordination from the attackers would be null and void.

That throws it way off onto the attackers' side of the scale again. Drop on one side just to come up from behind on the other side. With how targeting and movement work, there'd be no viable way to defend against that. You're just swapping planets at that point. All of 1 guild's heavies on cooldown? You're defending against the entire server, another guild comes to clean up.

thus the limit on number of ships every person can throw, and how many can come in?

Limit doesn't matter, it'll turn into a literal ass-raping of the defender. Either you're nearest target while others come up from behind or your fleets are turning their backs on the first target to hit something on the opposite side of the map that dropped in a later round.
